WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES TO ADOPT COMMON VEHICLE NUMBER PLATES

Motor vehicles throughout the West Africa sub-region will soon be displaying a similar type of number plates and have their vital statistics recorded and stored in a single data base covering all 15 member countries of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).

The Executive Director of Ghana's National Road Safety Commission, May Obiri-Yeboah, disclosed this in Koforidua, about 60 kilometres north of the capital, Accra, where the Commission joined other West African counterparts to observe the eighth anniversary of the West African Road Safety Organization (WARSO) on Thursday.

According to YObiri-Yeboah, the use of similar plates and a single database, formed part of steps being taken by WARSO and ECOWAS to ensure safety on roads and check insecurity in West Africa.

She said the Commission was working in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service to make road safety education a subject in the school curricula.

She expressed satisfaction at the steady improvements in the number of road fatalities recorded in the country.
