CAF Increases WAFCON Prize Money by 45%, Winner’s Share Doubles


Rabat: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled to be held in Morocco in 2024. The prize for the tournament winner has been doubled, while the total prize money has been increased by 45%.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, stated that the winner of the upcoming tournament will receive one million dollars, a substantial increase from the 500,000 dollars awarded in 2022. The total prize pool has also been boosted to over 3.4 million dollars, up from the previous 2.4 million dollars.



Motsepe emphasized CAF’s ongoing commitment to the development and growth of women’s football across Africa. He highlighted that the 100% increase in the winner’s prize and the 45% increase in total prize money should aid in enhancing the salaries of women football players, coaches, and related employees. He also noted the consistent improvement in the quality and standard of women’s football in Africa, describing it as world-class.



Furthermore, Motsepe expressed excitement about the growing number of fans, broadcasting viewers, and sponsors associated with the tournament. The breakdown of the prize distribution for the participating national teams was also announced, with the runner-up set to receive 500,000 dollars, third place 350,000 dollars, and the fourth place 300,000 dollars. Each of the four quarter-finalists will receive 200,000 dollars, while the third and fourth-placed teams in each group will receive 150,000 dollars and 125,000 dollars, respectively.
