The Community Water and Sanitation Agency in collaboration with World Vision has marked Handwashing with Soap Day to improve hygiene practices in the Northern Region.
The event, supported by the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation, Afram Plains Development Organisation, and Global Communities, was held in Tamale.
It was to raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap and inculcate such habits into people, especially children, mothers and caregivers.
Mr Alhaji Ewura Ahmed, Northern Regional Director of CWSA, whose speech was read on his behalf, said handwashing with soap was important in preventing diseases.
He said ‘Studies have shown that the biggest killers of children and vulnerable adults in developing countries are respiratory tract infections and diarrheal diseases, which are both preventable through the act of simple handwashing with soap.’
He urged the citizenry to make handwashing with soap part of their lives to attain healthy lives.

Regional Minister, called on parents, teachers and caregivers to educate children on the importance of handwashing with soap.
