Lagos: Dr Izaq Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, has stated that the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ebute Meta is integral to the government’s initiative to reverse medical tourism within the country. During his visit to the hospital, Salako praised the management and staff for restoring confidence in Nigeria’s health system through their services.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the minister highlighted that despite the spatial constraints at FMC Ebute Meta, the management has leveraged these challenges effectively. Salako noted the creative use of space and the facility’s digital integration, citing the paperless system and high-quality supportive equipment as examples of the hospital’s modern approach. He expressed optimism about FMC’s role in advancing President Bola Tinubu’s agenda against medical tourism.
Dr Adedamola Dada, the Medical Director of FMC Ebute Meta, responded by outlining the hospital’s achievements over the past seven years. Dada reported a significant increase in annual patient numbers from 50,000 to over 200,000 and an expansion of bed space from 72 to 450 beds since he took charge. He attributed these improvements to strategic planning, enhanced equipment, workforce motivation, and the integration of technology into medical practices.
Dada also praised the hospital staff for their resilience and contributions, emphasising FMC Ebute Meta’s unique status as the only public tertiary hospital in Nigeria on Safe Care Level 4. The minister’s visit included tours of various departments and facilities, such as the drug store, physiotherapy department, and dialysis centre, underscoring the hospital’s comprehensive services and infrastructure.
