New Health Minister, Deputy Subscribe to Oath of Office

The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr Abu Bakarr Fofanah and his Deputy Ms Madina Sidratu Iyamide Rahman on Wednesday 17th September subscribed to the oath of office presided over by President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma during a quite ceremony held at State House.

Congratulating the new team on their assumption of office, President Koroma observed that the minister and his deputy are taking over the ministry at a very crucial time.

“We are right in the middle of the fight against Ebola. We know the effect Ebola is having on us, its toll on our people, the devastation of our economy and the international isolation that we are going through. This is one of the most challenging moments for my administration,” President Koroma said, adding that “I know that you are not new hands in the ministry, and that you are medical professionals, so that will give you an insight of what ought to be done professionally.”

The President expressed the need for efficiency and professionalism in the execution and completion of the fight against the deadly disease, and urged the new team to ensure the structures at the ministry are up to the task, noting that there will be a Ministry of Health and Sanitation after Ebola.

President Koroma explained that a lot of lessons have been learnt from the Ebola outbreak. The outbreak, he said, has exposed the weak health system in the country and admonished that plans are conceived to ensure that the Ministry of Health and Sanitation is structured in such a way that “we will not succumb to any future attack of this nature”.

He therefore encouraged the new ministers to intensify their efforts to increase the efficiency of the overall sector, adding that their experiences and exposure in the sector should be able to help them live up to the expectations of Sierra Leoneans to put Ebola under control as soon as possible.

President Koroma also reiterated the need for the new team to work and collaborate with the other sectors and MDAs to ensure that at the end of the day the fight against Ebola is won.

Responding, the new Minister of Health and Sanitation profusely thanked President Koroma for the confidence placed in them and assured all that they will not misplace his trust and will discharge their duties to the best of their abilities. Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation 2 Madina Rahman assured that they will do their very best.
