President Koroma Receives West African College of Surgeons

President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has received and held an aocacy meeting with a delegation from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) at the State Lodge, Hill Station.

The delegation was led by the current President of the West African College of Surgeons, Professor Harve Nangni Angate. President Koroma expressed delight that the delegation had paid him a visit and noted that they were preaching to the converted as he is a honorary member of the college.

The President promised to address all the concerns raised by Professor Angate with respect to the status of Postgraduate training in Sierra Leone and the need to start as soon as possible the following:

(a) Accreditation of existing Health Institutions in Sierra Leone

(b) Improved staffing for postgraduate teaching

(c) Procurement of modern equipment for the Teaching centres.

Secondly, the council of WACS also noted its desire to improve Specialist Facilities in Sierra Leone in the:

(a) Long Term: Fellowship Programme

(b) Short Term: Membership Programme

(c) Diploma Programmes to meet the Short Term needs in some specialists areas such as Anasthesia and Otolaryngologgy.

Thirdly, the West African Health Organization (WAHO) Budget Line to be re-instituted for the financing of Workshops and meetings at home and in the sub-region.

Fourth, Support for Sierra Leone for positions in WAHO and, finally, the Endowment Fund for Sierra Leone to be fully supported by the Government as it is designed to support the Postgraduate Programme.

Present at the meeting were the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Miatta Kargbo, Minister of State, Finance and Economic Development, Mabinty Daramy, the Secretary to the President, E.B. Osho Coker and the Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr Ernest Surrur.
