SOUTH AFRICAN HEALTH MINISTER EMPHASISES IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING

South African Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says breastfeeding is the most important intervention mothers can give to their new-born babies as breastfeeding plays an important role in lowering infant mortality rates and has helped save lives.

Speaking on the South African Broadcasting Corporation's Morning Live programme Monday, the h Minister said that in an effort to highlight the importance of breastfeeding, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the first week of August as Breastfeeding Week.

Motsoaledi said the invention of baby formula had lowered the percentages of breastfeeding in the country.

According to the minister, the banning of advertising for baby formula was done purely to discourage mothers from using formula but rather continue breastfeeding their babies.

It is believed that putting a baby on the breast immediately after birth provides the best start for the baby and saves lives.
